Gawler Day One

We had our first full day in Gawler. Gawler is a north suburb of Adelaide and has a population of 20,000. Gawler reminds me of a lot of my hometown of Hays. The morning was spent at the Turretgfield Agricultural Research Station where we learned about the research in combating Huntington's Disease. The station was located out in the country and it was absolutely beautiful. Our hosts keep commenting that we are in the region at the right time of the year before the ground starts browning. The area that we are in is very similar to the Flint Hills region in Kansas.

Check out some pics of the research station at Flickr.

Lunch was spent at the Gunglian Hotel which was the location of a popular TV series in Australia called McLeod's Daughter. We toured a bottle factory in the afternoon where they produce around 250 wine bottles a minute for the wine industry and 450 beer bottles a minute.

Final Landing in Adelaide

After 30 hours of travel, we finally made our destination. Our district hosts quickly took us to a beach side restaurant and the view did not disappoint.

Our hosts from Gawler and the district are all part of this photograph:

Kudos to Sarah for the first unsolicited food adventure when she ordered the Kangaroo Carpaccio. It surprisingly tasted like beef carpaccio to me.

Packing like crazy

Dear Rotarians,
It's the weekend before we depart and everyone is racing around taking care of last minute tasks. Many of us have heard from our Australian hosts already, and they seem like a fun-loving group -- ready to show us a very good time. The Aussie district, 9500, has prepared the schedule booklet to beat all booklets! They will have it bound for us, and will present it to us upon arrival. The Australians have set the bar high and we plan to meet the challenge when they come to our district, 5710, in April, 2011. We also hope to meet the Australian team while we're in Adelaide. And now .... back to packing! -- Pam
